Door Locks: What Usually Goes Wrong

Modern UPVC and composite doors use a multi-point locking mechanism - several locking points along the edge of the door, operated by lifting the handle and turning the key. These are generally reliable, but the mechanism inside can wear or seize over time, especially on a door used multiple times a day. A door that's hard to lock, where the key turns but the door doesn't fully engage, or where you have to lift and slam the handle to get it to catch, is a classic sign the mechanism needs attention rather than replacement. Door Panel Replacement

Composite and panelled UPVC doors are built with a separate panel section - if that panel gets cracked, badly scratched, or damaged (common after a knock from a bike, a pushchair, or simply years of use), it can usually be replaced on its own rather than needing the whole door and frame swapped out. A Door That's Dropped or Sticking

Doors are heavy, and over years of use the hinges carry that weight every time it's opened and closed. A door that's started dragging on the frame, or that needs a shoulder-barge to close properly, has usually dropped slightly on worn hinges rather than warped out of shape. This is a straightforward adjustment or hinge replacement in most cases, done in well under an hour, and it's worth getting looked at before the dragging itself starts damaging the frame or the floor beneath.

Draughts and Weatherproofing

A door that closes and locks properly but still lets a draught through is usually a seal problem rather than anything structural - the rubber weather seal around the frame perishes over time, particularly on the side that takes the most weather, and once it's compressed or split it stops doing its job even though everything else about the door looks fine. This is a simple, low-cost fix - the seal is replaced in the affected section without needing to touch the door or frame themselves - and it's often the single biggest improvement you can make to a draughty door for the smallest outlay.

Older Doors vs Newer Doors: Different Problems

What tends to go wrong depends a lot on the age of the door. On older UPVC doors - ten years old or more - it's usually mechanical wear: locks and hinges that have simply done a lot of cycles and are due for replacement, or a seal that's perished from years of weather exposure. On newer doors, problems are more often installation-related - a door that was never quite squared up properly in the frame, or hardware that was a slightly wrong fit from the start and has been working against itself ever since. Either way, we diagnose based on what's actually in front of us rather than assuming age is the only factor.
