Choosing the Right Window for Your Property

Not every house wants the same window, and we'd rather talk you through the options properly than fit whatever's quickest. UPVC is the default for most homes because it's low-maintenance, weather-resistant, and available in enough colours and woodgrain finishes that it doesn't have to look like plastic on a period property. For flats and terraces across Newcastle, Gateshead and Durham, a sash-style UPVC window - designed to keep the sliding-sash look of the original frame - is often the right call, particularly where a conservation area or a landlord's preference means the property needs to keep its original appearance from the street.

Traditional and French-style windows come into their own on Victorian and Edwardian terraces, where the proportions and glazing bar pattern of the original frame matter to the look of the whole street, not just the one house. We measure against what's already there - or what would have originally been there, on a property where the windows have already been altered once before - rather than fitting a generic modern frame that looks out of place next to a stone or brick period frontage.

For newer builds and extensions, where there's no period detailing to match, a clean A-rated energy-efficient window is usually the most cost-effective option. These are still UPVC in most cases, but built around a slimmer, more thermally efficient profile designed to hit the highest energy ratings rather than to mimic an older style.

Double & Triple Glazing: What's the Actual Difference

Double glazing - two panes of glass with a sealed gap between them, usually filled with argon gas - is the standard for pretty much every window we fit now, and has been for years. It cuts heat loss, cuts noise, and stops the cold-glass draught you get standing near a single-glazed window in winter. Triple glazing adds a third pane and a second gap, pushing the thermal performance further again. It costs more, and on a lot of properties the difference in day-to-day comfort over double glazing is marginal - but on a north-facing room, a house near a busy road, or a property where heating costs are a real concern, it can be worth the extra outlay. We'll tell you honestly whether triple glazing is likely to make a noticeable difference on your specific property, rather than upselling it as standard.

Materials, Glass & Energy Ratings

Every window we fit is glazed with A-rated energy-efficient glass as standard, which means it meets the top band on the Window Energy Rating scale used across the UK. In practice that comes down to a few things working together: a low U-value (a measure of how much heat escapes through the glass and frame - the lower the better), a Low-E coating on the inner pane that reflects heat back into the room rather than letting it escape, and an argon-filled gap between the panes that insulates far better than plain air. None of this is an optional upgrade on the windows we install - it's the standard spec, because fitting anything less on a full replacement job doesn't make sense when the difference in cost is small and the difference in your heating bill over the following winters isn't.

Frame profile matters too, and it's something that's easy to overlook when you're comparing quotes on price alone. A cheaper, thinner UPVC profile with fewer internal chambers will cost less upfront but perform worse thermally and is more likely to flex or discolour over time. Signs You Need New Windows, Not Just a Repair

• The frame itself has warped, cracked, or rotted (common on older timber-effect UPVC and any original timber frame)
• You're getting persistent draughts even after hinges, locks and seals have been checked
• Condensation is forming between the panes on multiple windows, not just one sealed unit
• The windows are single glazed, or early double glazing that's well past its thermal performance
• You're renovating or extending and want the whole house to match

If we get to a property and the honest answer is that a repair will do the job for a fraction of the cost, we'll say so. Full replacement is the bigger job and the bigger invoice, and we'd rather you trust us with the smaller job than not trust us at all.
